Army Full Scholarship For Higher Healthcare Education w/ Living Stipend
The Health Professions Scholarship Program is an all-inclusive scholarship that will pay the tuition to a medical school. It will cover Medical School, Dental School, Veterinary School (2 or 3 year), Optometry School (2 or 3 year), Clinical Psychology (1 or 2 year) and also 3 Nursing Programs (Midwife, Family Nurse Practitioner, and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist).
Every year the Army selects over 300 individuals to receive a scholarship to attend a medical school of their choice and become an Army Officer. You would be able to attend the medical school of your choice on a full scholarship (no tuition cap), receive an officer commission while attending school, a $20,000 signing bonus, and a stipend of over $2,400 per month. Your scholarship payback when out of training is one year of service for each year of medical school.
The Army has over 79 in-house residencies in 25 specialties to include two civilian sponsored options (ER and radiology, both also available in-house).
The Army has 148 fellowship types, 68 in-house programs and 119 civilian sponsored offerings.
The Army has the largest GME program within all the military branches and our graduates have an average of 95% first time board pass rate and it has been 100% for the past three years in 14 specialties (national average ranges from 79% to 88%).
Our residencies typically don't exceed 2-3 applicants per slot offered. The Civilian slots can be highly competitive with upwards to 30 applicants per residency slot available. Of course there is going to be competition for certain residencies since there are limited number of slots available. Residencies like surgery have a smaller number per class, however, there are 5 Army surgical residencies so there are, overall, more slots available.
One of the things that the Army does as opposed to the other branches (Navy, Air Force), is that during the summer breaks between med school years, we offer what is called Active Duty Training (ADT). What this is, is that we offer our HPSP students the opportunity to shadow residencies for 45 days. This allows you to get a better idea on what specialty you would like to get into and also let you "rub elbows" sort of speak with the Residency Program Directors. So, when it comes time to match and the program director sees your name on the list he/she is much more incline to select you, not just based on your school scores and other documents.
